Poster designed by Dave from Spin. Futurising is an event happening in June where graduates from the creative courses can meet potential employers for advice and opportunities. Today we were at the site, taking photos for the postcard, which will have a print run of 40,000 and be handed out at universities across the country. These are 2 possibilities, but their likelihood of being chosen is quite low. I like them though.

No Time Like The Present

In April 2009, 45 of us from the Graphic Communication course at Bath Spa put on a really successful exhibition in East London called 'Progress'. The theme we decided to loosely base all our work for the show on was that of, yup, progress.
I knew a lot of people would exhibit pieces of print, which presented itself as an opportunity for me to try something completely different.

After a while, I came up with a title for the piece — "Progress in progress" without actually having any work behind it. Then from that wordplay, created a sound installation which would document the actual live sounds in the show, but desyncronise the listener from the present in order to give them a unique point of reference to the world around them.

The equipment used — Laptop, Boundary Microphone, Mic Pre-Amp, headphones and various cables.

The laptop was running Logic Express (music production software) which had 1 track constantly listening for an input (but not recording). This in turn ran a tape delay effect, which buffered the audio input by 3 seconds before playing it back out into the headphones.

It was popular with nephews and mums.

Despite having quite an abstract concept, people seemed to have fun with it. As a piece, it really depended on the interaction of people around it. If someone approached the plinth in complete silence, that's all they would hear, and they'd walk away in silence (with a raised eyebrow). If someone put the headphones on after talking to someone nearby, they got quite a suprise.
It was nice to see some work of mine have such a polarizing effect on people.

Teashirt logo refresh

Some freelance work doing a small logo refresh for online t-shirt design company, Teashirt. Here's an attempt I'm quite happy with at the minute.

Below is the original. Particular points that I needed to look at were the font, colour scheme and shape of the surrounded teacup. I also felt that the purely 2D graphic of the new logo appeared more striking and iconic than at an isometric angle.

Dazed & Confused / Hobbyism Competition

Well, there's a result. I won the competition to come up with a design for music label Full Time Hobby's latest compilation album! It'll be on shelves in april, and I have to design the rest of it (4 page leaflet) soon. It's also going to be featured on some Firetrap products, but I don't know yet. The first attempts at creating a website for the 2010 National Outsourcing Association's (NOA) Yearbook. Already given the logo and content to work with, I've tried to keep to a reserved colour palate and a simple grid-based layout which I believe sets it apart from all the other PR websites.

The images are my own, placeholders for incoming content.

Logo refresh and website design for Evron Centre

I recently volunteered to help with the advertising and design elements of the Evron Centre in Stockport. The Centre is a registered charity run by a group of religious Sisters, who provide a relaxing environment for retreat days, carers of those with disabilities, and conference and training days for locals. I thought it was a noble cause and a really interesting brief.

My first steps have been to re-evaluate the current logo, and aim to achieve a consistent look for all the documents produced at the centre. At a glance, that includes letterheads, website, in-house promotional posters, brochures and event listings.
The logo couldn't be radically changed, as it is currently on all the signage around the house and carpark.

...it might go something like this. Another old video I dug up, this one was a response to working for months on a project only to have it scrapped. Eatbigfish are a branding consultancy who kindly gave a few students from Bath the opportunity to redesign their website, which due to time constraints (we were approaching degree hand-in).
However, it was a great project to be a part of. I learnt so much about working as a team of people with varying skills and interests, pitching ideas to clients, and new ways of approaching ideas.

This video is a tongue-in-cheek response to all of this, plus I always wanted to mix The Four Seasons into a video. Bangin'

The very first experiments into augmented reality, using album art I made as a starting point.
Lots of problems to sort out: Clipping, Animation looping etc.

The idea came from coming up with ideas for a page when I was working at Wallpaper* magazine. The page was an introduction to the design in the new year, and had to convey a sense of new triumphing over old. The idea of simple shapes contrasting heavily with each other led on to the album art.

Character Study

Human characters from the videogame Deus Ex. Video game packaging/posters tend to be quite hideous. You walk in to a games store and all you see on nearly every front cover is a picture of the main character, holding a gun, looking broody. Like mainstream film posters now, it fulfils a role of quickly showing the viewer the main characters and scenes, but nothing more. It doesn't really tell you about the mood of the game, but I suppose it has to be high impact to grab attention from the shelves.

I want to make a small piece of work exploring other potential routes in advertising games. Using my favourite game, Deus Ex as a starter, I want to create something which shows what I perceive to be great about it. In this example, Deus Ex has some great, fully-realised characters, and some of the best written dialogue in any game ever.

By ripping out the texture maps for the faces, I now have a catalogue to play with. The 128x128 pixel texture maps look really crude by todays standards, but it was conversations and situations that the player encountered with them that breathed life into them.

Bad Album Art works

Does everything have to be well designed? If there's anything rap album covers tell us, it's "fuck you cracka!" To look at the Pen 'n' Pixel archive is to experience possibly the gaudiest album covers ever created. I think its mostly for Dirty South rappers, who tend to be a bit more extravagant than the rest, but it.....dare I say.....kinda works......

Not everyone can/or should have Dan Tobin Smith do their covers.

Robbie Cooper's "Immersion" series documents the faces of people engaged in various immersive activities. These children are playing videogames, and a more recent video deals with pornography. Proper voyeurama!
Cooper also wrote the book, 'Alter Ego', which showed side-by-side photographs of real-world people and their online avatars in MMORPGS. If anything, it goes to show that pretty much all ingame female characters are played by men...

The Path is a 'videogame' in the most unique sense of the word. It poses no real puzzles or challenges, and you can only walk or run. The iffy trailer might go some way to explain what it's about (a reimagination of the Little Red Riding Hood tale), but having just bought the game (£6), I can say that it is fucking terrifying. As a film it might be moderatly creepy, but just the fact that you control where the girls go in the forest makes it much scarier.

A free game by the same guys that everyone should try out is The Graveyard. Similar in what I think they're trying to get across, play it before watching the video. Or watch the video for 3 seconds, then play it.

Just stripped the website right down. Haven't completely thrown everything away; the work's just catalogued into finished pieces and rough work/thoughts/generally things which get lost in the ether.

Now that I'm integrated with Flickr, Blogger and Twitter (urgh, social media, never thought I'd stoop this low) I'm hoping that it fills the gap between my brain and a finished piece of work.
